I’ve pretty much spent my life growing up in the state of VT. Needless to say the state of VT has finally got past the good ole boy, redneck ways and has finally legalized same sex marriage. Back when Howard Dean was Gov a lot of the old time Vermonters posted “TAKE BACK VERMONT” signs all over the state. They felt that an out of stater was corrupting the state by passing the Civil Union bill. Recently Gov Jim Douglas tried to veto the legislation to legalize same sex marriages.
“The same-sex marriage law will go into effect Sept. 1. The state House and Senate had sent the bill to the Governor’s office Monday evening where, as expected, it met with rejection.
The Senate began the override debate at about 10 a.m. as lobbying continued in the House chambers nearby. “This is our moment,” Sen. Peter Shumlin told senate members as the Senate debate began.
The debate was short as the Senate voted to override Douglas’ veto 23-5. Under Vermont law, two-thirds of each chamber had to vote for override.
“Today Vermont legislators did the right thing by overriding Governor Douglas’ veto and granting equal rights to all Vermonters,” Shumlin said in a statement released not long after the House vote. “The struggle for equal rights is never easy … Today is another historic day for Vermont and I have never felt more proud as we become the first state in the country to enact marriage equality not as the result of a court order, but because it is the right thing to do.”
After the secretary of the Senate delivered the bill to the governor’s office Monday night, Douglas’ staff handed the bill back with a letter announcing the governor’s formal veto and his reasons for it. The governor cited reasons he has shared before, saying he believes marriage is between a man and a woman. In his letter, Douglas said same-sex couples would be denied federal benefits even if the bill were to become law”.
I have an uncle that is gay, and a lot of my close friends are. I think that the only true judge is God! Society needs to stop the role playing and acting like the are the judge and jury. It doesn’t matter if you are a man that loves a man or a woman who loves a woman. As long as you are happy who freaking cares. We can not base our fears on the Bible. Who
can really say what version of the Bible is the correct one and who can really say what the Lord said in the Bible is based on a man and a woman? We are all human beings. It is sad that the rights of gay Americans are not the same as straight Americans. Last time I checked this was the land of the free and the Bill of Rights and Constitution applied to all Americans. Whether your straight or Gay, we all should have equal rights.
