Inspiring Musical Drama Features Brand-New, Original Song “Promises,” Written and Performed by Debbie Gibson
Debuts Exclusively on Sunday, April 12 at 7 p.m. EDT / 6 p.m. PDT
ATLANTA – UP presents the exclusive premiere of The Music In Me (#MusicinMe), an uplifting musical drama about a small town girl who had given up her dreams of musically performing only to rediscover her joy of singing/songwriting as an adult through her work with a failing church choir. Starring Debbie Gibson (Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark, “3 Billion and Counting”) and Gloria Reuben (Lincoln, “E.R.”), the original UP Premiere Movie The Music In Me will make its television debut on Sunday, April 12 at 7:00 p.m. EDT / 6:00 p.m. PDT.
Gibson has written and performs the movie’s original song, “Promises.” Both Gibson and Reuben sing and perform with the choir in the film.
Filmed in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, the movie is executive produced by Stanton W. Kamens and Roma Roth in association with UP Entertainment, Reel World Management and Stanton W. Kamens Entertainment, and produced by Roma Roth in Sudbury with the participation of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund (NOHFC). John Bradshaw (Catch a Christmas Star, Come Dance with Me) directs the movie. Bryar Freed (UP’s Love Finds You In Sugarcreek, Paper Angels) wrote the script. The ensemble cast also includes Antonio Cupo (American Mary, “Bomb Girls”), Amy Forsyth (“Defiance,” “Reign”), Cedric Smith (“Copper,” “Avonlea”), Marcia Bennett (Serendipity, “Happy Town”), Kim Roberts (“The Strain,” “Lucky 7”) and Mike Lobel (“Degrassi: The Next Generation,” “Really Me”).
Having traded in her dreams of becoming a professional singer to care for her aging parents and their neighborhood hardware store, Jessica (Debbie Gibson) is asked to step in as choir director for a failing church as they prepare for their the big centennial celebration. When she arrives, Jessica is shocked to discover that the earnest choir can’t sing and that the wary Church Deaconess (Gloria Reuben) is betting on her to fail. As she dives into rehearsals, Jessica builds a friendship with church handyman Ben (Antonio Cupo) and is challenged by choir member and teen runaway Alice (Amy Forsyth). Through their friendship and her work with the choir, she rekindles her love of music and finally finishes the song she’s been struggling with for many years – ultimately finding love and a start to the music career she’s always dreamed of pursuing.
“In The Music In Me, the multi-talented, world record setting Debbie Gibson shines as a hardworking, single woman, Jess, who dusts off a long-delayed dream, not knowing that her musical journey to fine tune a broken choir will lead to all sorts of joy in her life,” said Sophia Kelley, senior vice president, programming, UP. “Furthermore, both actress/singer/social activist Gloria Reuben (who was once a backup singer for Tina Turner) and young actress Amy Forsyth lend their beautiful voices to the choir and Debbie’s original song ‘Promises.’”
From singer, songwriter and musician to TV/film/Broadway actress and dancer, Gibson embodies what it truly means to be an entertainer. A music prodigy, she exploded on the Billboard Pop Charts as a teenager with the self-penned “Only In My Dreams.” The “Original Pop Princess” quickly became the youngest artist ever to write, produce and perform a No. 1 hit song, “Foolish Beat,” and entered the Guinness Book of World Records. Among her many accomplishments, Gibson has sold more than 16 million albums worldwide, performed for British Royalty and hosted “The American Music Awards,” produced by friend and legend Dick Clark.
